Weighed My Daughter

So if you read my last entry you know that in grades 3 – 12 they are now being weighed and having their Body Mass Index calculated and sent home. Last year I had asked for the school to not do it anymore that is a job for our pediatrician and not for the school. When I had not heard about it yet this year I figured they were not going to do it this year. That was until my 10 year old came home and said they weighed him at school and he lost 3 pounds. SO first I congratulated him for losing 3 pounds but I asked him why they weighed him. He explained how it was done and it was nothing bad but I did not want him to get done and stop eating again this year.

I immediately thought of my daughter who is now in 3rd grade so this would be the first year for them to do it to her. She already is weight obsessed and this would only add to that. I immediately emailed the principle and asked them not to do it. I then called my daughter in and asked her if they had weighed her yet and she said no and I told her it was ok for her to tell them no. Now my daughter is not a trouble maker at school, she is always an A honor roll student no tallies or detention ever she did not want to tell the teachers no.

I received an email back from the principle the next morning and said she talked to the nurse and she was already aware I did not want them to get letters home regarding this so she was just going to call me. So the nurse remembered my request but the principle or PE teacher. I emailed back again and said I was calling the state education board and I wanted to opt out. She replies a short time later with a phone call saying that my daughter had already been weighed but she has noted that we want to opt out in future years. She then says if you wanted to opt out you should have told us. UM well I did last year when this happened and I reminded her of the email I sent to her, the nurse and gym teacher last year and she said she remembered. Well if she remembered why did they weigh them again this year? She said they would not be weighed anymore yet 2 days later my son says “I was weighed again this time without my shoes on”! Ok really?

What do you think about kids getting weighed and BMI’s calculated at school?

About Tammy Woolard

My name is Tammy and I am 40 year old mother of 3 wonderful children who came to us through domestic adoption. Although we did not have any fertility issues we chose adoption because there are so many kids that did not ask to be born but truly want a family to love. We did research on adoption choices and decided on domestic adoption through CPS. You would be surprised the differences between each agency. The adoption process is nothing like you see in the movies. I am also a 5 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed my kids were 3, 5 and 7 I did so much research I may have driven my Dr. a little crazy but that is ok it is my body not his.
