Well, I’m delighted to announce that I weighed in at 255.8. After an entire month of hitting the gym and not losing an ounce, it’s very nice to finally see the scale show some results. This brings my total weight loss to 18 pounds.
It’s interesting to me just how this came about. Like I mentioned, I’ve been at the gym five days a week for the last month. I’ve done thirty minutes on the recumbent bike, which is a distance of between 5.06 and 5.41 miles, depending on how fast I pedal, and it burns anywhere from 140-150 calories. In the last two weeks I added the track to my workout, beginning with a half mile and then increasing to a mile. I’m now at the gym for nearly an hour a day.
However, this last week I noticed that I was just worn out. I felt deeply tired, my nerves were shot, and I wasn’t losing any weight. I know that my muscle mass was increasing and my fat was decreasing at the same time, but to work that hard and see no difference on the scale? It was pretty disheartening. I decided to cut back on my exercise and go just on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Oddly enough, the first day I didn’t go to the gym, I showed a one pound loss. This after a month of no loss. The next day, I lost another .4, and then after that, .8. All in all, that’s 2.2 pounds since Friday, when this decision was reached.
I have no idea why this happened. Of course, I never really have understood weight loss, as is completely obvious. But I know that I feel better, having cut back on the exercise. In retrospect, it makes sense that I should cut back – I went from no exercise to going five times a week, and that’s pretty shocking to the system. But I’m that way – I’m an all-or-nothing kind of person. I get that from my mother – she doesn’t know how to do anything half-way either.
I head back to the gym in a few minutes and I’ll be curious to see what tomorrow’s weight is. Will I continue to lose, or will I only lose on the days I don’t exercise? An interesting experiment to be sure. I’ll keep you updated.
