Weight a Minute! Dress for Success at the Gym

I have no weight gain or loss to report to you. I’ve decided not to get on the scale until after boutique season is over for me – my gain after the last boutique was disheartening and I’ve decided to simply do the best I can and not worry too much about it until the beginning of December. Therefore, I have nothing to say.

What I’d like to share instead are some things I’ve found to be very true about working out. The way you dress makes all the difference.

1. Wear thick enough socks. I have several pairs of socks that are a little more padded on the bottom, and I’ve found that my feet do better when I wear them. I do occasionally slip and put on a thinner pair on my way to the gym, but each time, I can feel the difference in the support my feet are getting.

2. Wear breathable fabric. This is a must! I have one pair of sweats that have an elastic fiber woven through, and those things don’t breathe at all. When I wear those to the gym, I get overheated far before my workout time is over, and I feel rotten the rest of the day. Our bodies need to ventilate themselves when we exercise, and if we don’t wear fabric that allows our skin to breathe, we’re creating a little oven to bake ourselves in.

3. Wear good shoes. I’ve found that even when I’m just riding the bike and won’t be doing the track that day, the shoes I wear need to be supportive. We don’t just want our feet to be protected, but our ankles, knees, and hips too, all of which affect how our back feels. If you’re working out in less-than-supportive shoes, you’re hurting yourself.

4. If you’ve got heavy hair, like I do, put it up. Your neck and forehead will be better able to ventilate, and hey, if you’ve got a ponytail, the motion it creates is like a little built-in fan on the back of your head. No batteries required!
