Weight Loss for Breastfeeding Moms: Finding the Motivation

Well, a week has gone by since I started guest blogging on this topic and I’m still trying to find the motivation to work out. Finding the motivation to get back in shape is a common problem after pregnancy. New mothers are a tired and busy bunch. When you have the odd spare moment, you may not want to spend it working out.

Motivation has been an issue after each baby, but it’s even worse this time around. I had my fourth baby in July and I am tired. I definitely lack the motivation to work out. This week has been especially trying, since my two oldest girls have had strep and been home sick from school.

You have to get in the right frame of mind to commit to an exercise routine. When you are up half the night breastfeeding your baby and up to your ankles in laundry that needs to be folded, finding the motivation to work out can seem like a joke. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to help increase your motivation.

Work out with a friend. If possible, find a work out buddy who is also a mother. She will be able to relate to your hectic schedule and lack of routine. Whether you join a gym together or just commit to a brisk walk around the neighborhood after dinner, it’s easier to stick to it when you have company. When one of you feels like skipping a work out, the other can provide the motivation.

Do it for your baby. This motivational method will work best for me. I quit smoking for my children, so I would live to see them grow up. Take the same approach with weight loss. Remaining significantly overweight will increase your risk of a wide variety of illnesses later in life. Realize that by getting in shape, you are making an investment in your future health.

Finding the right type of exercise is important for remaining motivated. If you hate the atmosphere of the gym, don’t join. You won’t go and you’ll waste your money. I hate aerobics and would never find the motivation to actually show up. Sign up for an exercise class, work out at home or join the local pool and go swimming. Find something you really enjoy to increase your motivation to exercise.
