Welcome to the midlife mom blog. If you are a mom who gave birth after turning 35, then this blog is for you. I’m your guide Myra, a single mid-life mom with a five -year- old son, who was born when I was 36. I am a freelance writer and avid reader, also. I hope this blog will be useful to you. I plan to offer as much relevant information as I can get my little hands on as well as talk mom to mom about what it’s like to be a mid-life momma.
I am also a Hurricane Katrina survivor. I was lucky to get out way ahead of the storm. Right now, we’re living in Mobile, Alabama with family until my house is repaired. People ask what it was like going home that first time and I have to say one word : surreal. It was like a black and white photo really. And walking into my house and seeing my belongings wet and molded, well no words can describe what that was like. I was grateful that all of my son’s baby pictures were sparred. Although I was certain the Hurricane would spare us once again, I decided to put his pictures and a few other mementos high on a shelf in my bedroom closet. I can replace furniture and clothes and things like but I would have been so sad to lose those irreplaceable memories.
Mid-life mommas take heart. You’re not alone. Over the past few decades the number of older women having babies has been steadily rising. Many women are delaying having children earlier because of their careers. Some have infertility problems and some , well some have pleasant little accidents. No matter how you came to be a midlife mom, now that you are here come on in, sit down and stay awhile.
Being a mid-life mom can be challenging at times but the one thing we have to remember is that we are moms first, older moms second. We have to deal with the same issues : potty training, teething, picky eaters, discipline, childcare. We may have additional concerns that younger moms may not have like health (i.e. menopause) issues, tough career decisions, caring for aging parents, etc. I’ll address these and many more issues in upcoming blogs. I also want to get as much feedback from you as I can. Talk to me about what issues concern you so that we can put it on the table and discuss it. We’ll have a little fun to. Parenting does have humorous moments, if you haven’t experienced any yet, I promise they will come.
For now, thanks for stopping by. Feel free to introduce yourself but most of all come back. Until then, like I said earlier, you’re not alone. Kay Hutchison, 62, a Senior Senator from Texas has two kids under six. Sharon Stone, Diane Keaton, Joan Lunden and Cheryl Tiegs, all well over 40, have young kids. Not to mention the many non-celebrities, like the 62 year-old legally blind woman who gave birth to her 12th child recently! I’ll tell you about her later.
