You don’t have to be a dog lover to love this blog. Here I thought Wisconsin was the booze capital of the midwest… I guess I was wrong. A friend of mine just returned from Minneapolis, Minnesota with his pooch Ming-Ming… drunk! Okay, I’m kidding, they weren’t drunk, but they did spend the weekend at the Millennium Hotel’s “Yappy Hour” where they imbibed in “poodle coladas,” “chocolate Labrador martinis,” and “K9 Cosmos.”
It’s true… and they weren’t alone. The hotel hosted a cocktail-wagging happy hour for pets and their owners. From what I hear the turnout was incredible. Dog owners had the chance to socialize with their pets and other animal lovers from across the country. As my friend put it: “It was a great place to hang out with people who indulge their dogs as much as I do.” Indulge? That’s a serious understatement. (I saw the pictures!) My friend’s pampered pooch was in good company standing alongside a black fluffball (I don’t know my dogs) decked out in a pink dress with sequins and a matching pink bow.
One four-legged pooch didn’t need to use any of her legs—her owner pushed her around in a pink stroller during the event. Another dog named Willie (recently rescued from a puppy mill in Iowa) didn’t have to worry about drinking and driving (or walking for that matter) his owner toted him around in a baby carrier all evening.
If you don’t have a dog, you may consider these “Yappy Hour” participants “freaky dog people” or “a little nutty.” But, I have a feeling that was part of the event’s charm. Most dogs don’t have a problem making new friends and dog owners, well, they are their own breed. Put them in the same room together and to me that spells P-A-R-T-Y. I mean where else can you and your furry friend sip on a Bloodhound Cosmo while listening to a live broadcast of the Animal Wise radio show? And the best part: you can talk about your dog all you want without worrying that you are boring anyone.
If you missed out on this month’s “Yappy Hour” don’t worry–the Millennium Hotel is planning to host another on December 10th. YIP-py!
