Welcoming Houseguests

Summertime is the season of houseguests. I think everyone has at least one every year. My mom will be coming to visit for my sisters wedding so I’m getting ready for her company.

In addition to cleaning the house I need to get the room she will sleep in ready. There are some basic things you can do to make your houseguests stay a little nicer.

Bathroom
Lots of clean towels, easily accessible
Extra rolls of toilet paper in a convenient place
Toiletries- usually when staying at someone else’s home you don’t bring shampoo and toothpaste so make sure they are available and pick up an extra toothbrush in case they forget.
I also make sure lotion is available. My mother is coming for a humid state to the desert, it’s tough on your skin.

Kitchen
Drinks and snacks, make sure your guests can fix themselves a sandwich and get a drink without always having to ask.
If you have a coffee drinker visiting make sure you have cream and sugar.

Guest room
Clean sheets are a given but throw an extra blanket across the bottom of the bed in case your home is cooler than what they are used to.
I place a basket on the dresser with little things like a nail file, nail clippers, needle and thread, tweezers, and anything else I think they might need.
Make sure there is a good reading light. When I visit people I like to unwind by reading before bed, a good light helps.

Also give your guest the password to your wireless network so they can use their own device, if they’ve brought one. A map of your area is nice, I print one online then I can mark things like the nearest coffee shop, the place with the best gas prices and the grocery store.

Little things will help make their stay more pleasant and make them feel more welcome in your home.
