There is an increasing teaching shortage nationwide. Many states and schools are looking to alternatives in order to fill the empty positions. One such program is the lateral entry teacher. This program may also be called “Alternatives to Licensure.” The program basically allows professionals who have a bachelor’s degree or higher to entry the teaching field prior to receiving their teaching license. The individuals will be issued a temporary license, which allows them to teach while taking classes about teaching in a classroom.
While this does allow the school districts to fill the empty teaching positions, it also allows people to teach your children who do not have prior training in teaching or classroom management. Many people fail to see the negative aspects that this can have on the classroom and the individual who is beginning a teaching career. Teaching is a very time consuming job. In addition to struggling to adjust to teaching, these individuals are required to complete courses at a local college or university in order to fulfill the licensing requirements on time.
Many districts offer a teaching orientation course for first year and lateral entry teachers. This course goes over basic classroom management and district policies that the teachers should follow. The lateral entry teachers are at a disadvantage compared to first year teacher because many lack actual classroom experience. The districts also offer mentors who help the new teachers adjust to teaching, and answer questions and problem areas. Many mentors will observe the new teacher in action, and give advice and help.
While a person may be extremely knowledgeable in a certain field of study, he may have a hard time communicating that knowledge to his students. One aspect that is discussed in teacher training is the different ways that people learn. Another aspect is the correct way to assess (or test) what the student has learned.
This solution may work well for some individuals and school districts. Those with good mentoring programs tend to do better. For others it may prove too difficult and result in teachers only lasting a year. Tomorrow I will discuss ways to make this experience positive for everyone involved.
