A couple weeks ago, someone asked me what I thought the qualities and characteristics of the “ideal” freelancer were—I couldn’t answer right away since my own experience as a freelance writer and work-from-homer is so tainted by my life as a single parent. But, I’ve had a couple weeks to mull it over and I thought we might have a little discussion here as well…What ARE the characteristics of the ideal freelancer?
Flexibility and professionalism come to mind. A person has to be able to stay motivated and work from a home office full of distractions and changes, but still appear very professional and be able to meet deadlines and produce the desired results. Most clients and editors don’t really care if my kids are sick or the plumbing is backed up—so even if I’m sitting here in my pajamas, I need to be able to come across as a professional and produce professional-quality work.
I think a certain amount of fearlessness is also a good quality to have. Or, at least if a freelancer isn’t fearless, he or she can fake it. We have to be able to call anyone or everyone, talk to editors and presidents, get interviews, take risks, and keep plugging away. This means there has to be a willingness to live with (or swallow) the fears that might keep another person working in a more traditional job.
I also think there needs to be equal parts determination and creativity thrown into the make-up of the ideal freelancer. Creativity in order to keep coming up with ideas and fresh approaches, and the determination to keep plugging away—sending out queries, making contacts, writing articles and pieces—regardless of the lack of feedback or rejection.
Do you have any additions or suggestions for they personality traits and characteristics that would make for the ideal freelancer?
