Sometimes when I’m searching the internet for ideas I come across something that makes my skin itch. This is one of those posts. Dust mites, now that I know about them I may never get a good nights sleep!
Dust mites cannot be seen with the naked eye but they can still cause serious health problems such as allergies, asthma, nasal polyps and eczema. Believe it or not, they are one of the most common causes of allergies and asthma. Dust mites need moisture and they feed on dead skin cells, ewwwww!
They love to hid in our beds, making our mattresses, sheets and pillows their homes. The average mattress is home to over two million dust mites. A single dust mite can produce twenty droppings a day. Makes you want to go take a nap doesn’t it?
Part of the problem is that mattresses are better quality so they last longer than they use to, giving our little friends plenty of time to multiply. Unfortunately there is no way to get rid of dust mites, all we can do is try to erect a barrier of sorts between us and them.
So, short of sleeping in a tree, which has some problems of it’s own, here are some tips to help keep those pesky little dust mites from feasting on your dead skin. Yuck!
Use allergy covers. Seal your mattress, box spring, comforter and pillows with these tightly woven covers that won’t allow the little buggers through.
Wash bedding and area rugs in hot water, once a week.
For items that aren’t’ machine washable, place them in the freezer for a couple of hours.
Don’t go to bed with wet hair, dust mites love moisture.
Regularly vacuum to help get rid of dust mites.
Aren’t you glad I shared this with you?
