What are your homeschoolers doing this summer?

As summer approaches, it is time for my family to switch from out regular homeschool schedule to out summer schedule. I want my children to continue spending time purposely learning every day without burning them out. I also want them to keep stay physically active, and working on their own personal interests.

Academically,

My son will work on Algebra, which he did not finish this year, as we wanted him to move through the course at his own pace. As he is only 13, he was a year ahead in math anyway, and so taking Algebra slow and steady would help him understand it better without getting behind. Instead of taking a break from Algebra which could cause him to lose ground, we plan to continue working on the curriculum through the summer.

My daughter will work on spelling this summer. The reason for this is because I want her to stop referring to herself as a poor speller. The only way to do this is to build her spelling skills. They way she will go into the next school year more confident in her writing abilities.

Physically,

We will also work on keeping them physically active. Both kids will spend as many mornings as possible at our subdivision swimming pool. In addition, we plan to continue working out at the Fencing club during the summer.

As for other activities:

I am seeking an advanced computer programming class for my son. All of the regular and rather expensive computer courses in my area are beginner classes, and that would be a waste of my son’s time and my money. We are considering visiting the local community college and having him take a course.

My daughter has pageant plans for late summer, but in the meantime, we are looking into joining a church or community drama club to keep her busy and her mind engaged.
