What Are Your New Year’s Plans?

How are you planning to celebrate the New Year’s tonight? I read somewhere, once that sleeping through the turning of the clock at midnight is bad luck. Not entirely sure why that would be in the modern day, when the New Year was celebrated at Samhain (Halloween), the night when the veil between this life and the next are considered to be at their thinnest – I suppose staying awake to honor all of those who passed before and to celebrate the turning of the year – that might have produced bad luck to forgo that ceremony.

The turning of the year on December 31st to January 1st is not remarked on by any other holiday joining with it. It is merely the celebration of turning one calendar year over to another. So that being said, going out to Time’s Square on New Year’s Eve or watching the Ball drop at midnight – I’ve done both of those things.

Attending Parties

I’ve attended parties before I was married and after I was married. My husband and I have held New Year’s Eve parties of our own. Tonight, we’ve been invited to more than a few, but an odd thing has happened over the last two or three years, neither of us are really interested in the traditional loud, raucous events marked by alcohol, music and party hats.

Instead, our goal today is to sweep the last bits of detritus of the last year away so that we can start our New Year fresh and refreshed. We have been cleaning since yesterday, making new homes for items given at Christmas. We’ve been cleaning out old materials that are stored away and hardly ever used. We’re also packing up the Christmas decorations and putting them away.

This is how we celebrate our New Year’s. We make peace with our past, clear away the leftovers so that when the New Year dawns – we’re looking forward and not scrabbling over what’s left of the old.
