Are you planning to take the kids to Disney World or are you opting to travel to Hawaii or the Bahamas with just your spouse? Has the slumping economy forced you to stay closer to home, or is this the summer you finally take your dream European vacation?
According to a new American Express survey, the family vacation is alive and well, and the current economy is not putting the brakes on summer travel plans.
So, where do you stack up against survey respondents?
According to the study, more than half of 2,000 adults questioned will be traveling with their children this summer, while 26 percent are opting for a couples getaway and 10 percent intend to vacation with friends.
What’s more, a huge chunk of those surveyed said they do not plan to let the recession put the brakes on their summer vacation plans. Most respondents revealed that they plan to spend about $1,000 per person on summer travel. According to the poll, a family of four expects to spend about $4,000 but that figure jumps to $6,400 among the more affluent.
Travel experts say the numbers indicate that people are passionate about taking annual summer trips, and they would rather “find creative ways to reduce the cost of their trip rather than do without it altogether.”
Nearly 90 percent of people surveyed said they plan to stay in the United States this summer in order to save on travel expenses. Meanwhile, roughly six percent said they are headed to the Caribbean, followed by five percent, who said they plan to go to Canada. Four percent said they are heading to Europe this summer.
To further reduce the cost of summer vacations, more than half of the survey respondents noted that they planned to drive rather than fly, and will take shorter trips or spend less on activities.
What are your summer vacation plans? Are you planning a staycation to save money or are you planning to travel abroad?
