Since I am a new blogger for the home business blog, you may be wondering whether or not I have a home business. I am proud to say that I currently have not just one, but two home businesses. Both of them are fairly new, since I started them after my son was born and he’s only a little over seven months old.
My writing business was the easiest of my two businesses to start because it evolved gradually over time. For a few years, I have been doing legal research and writing for a few attorneys that I know. When they have an issue that they would like to research, but do not have the time to do it themselves, they call me and I do the research for them. Since I have put my regular law practice on hold to stay home with my son, doing legal research and writing for others enables me to remain immersed in the field of law.
Although the legal research and writing that I do fills a need for the attorneys that I do it for, their need for my services is not constant. A few months after my son was born I realized that I was not getting enough work from the small group of legal research and writing clients that I have. I decided expand my writing business into other areas by putting myself out there as a freelance writer, and have been successful in doing so.
My other business is selling homemade baked goods at farmers’ markets twice a week. The first thing that I did once I got the idea that I would like to sell baked goods at farmers’ markets was to check out the rules and regulations for home bakeries in my state. I was delighted to discover that I did not have to get a license for my kitchen right away, I could wait until I was selling a certain amount of products each week.
I’ve been doing two markets per week since May, and I really enjoy it. Baking is my passion and I love to share it with others. Currently, my product mix includes molasses ginger cookies, lemon pound cakes, chocolate chip brownies, chocolate mini bundt cakes, and my signature item, peanut butter filled chocolate cupcakes.
One of the most exciting things about being a home business owner is talking to other home business owners and finding out what kind of businesses they have. I delight in knowing how have they taken their unique gifts and talents and turned them into careers? Every home business has a story, and I look forward to hearing yours.
