We accumulate trash everyday, every time we cook, or eat. But why throw it away when it can serve a greater purpose? The trash to treasure concept helps save money and can make a trashed item useful again. In fact, I love re-purposing items to use for organization, another hobby of mine.
Organizing small things can be a real challenge. You want to keep them handy, make sure there is enough space to store them, and utilize items the best way you can.
So how do you solve this problem?
Start saving your jars, film canisters, and any other empty item that would normally be tossed in the trash. Why? Because they can help you organize.
Clean out those jars or other containers thoroughly. Remove the labels using hot water and a scrubber. Now you have the perfect storage containers for nails, screws, nuts, bolts, buttons, loose change, paper clips, elastic bands, and so much more!
Because I’m a scrapbooker, I have lots of tiny crafting items and supplies. I tend to use jars (pickle, jelly, etc) to store eyelets, glitter, buttons, etc.
And the best thing is, you can see right through them which means you can easily identify everything inside at a glance!
Decorate the jar with pretty papers, fabrics, ribbons and other embellishments to have them match your normal home décor.
In addition to glass jars, empty film canisters are perfect for storing tiny items too. Things such as pins, buttons, tacks and other small items fit easily into the canisters and can be stored in a basket, drawer or on a shelf.
I use film canisters a lot because I always have an over abundance of them. The negative part of a film canister for storage is that they are not clear or see through and it is harder to identify the contents. To solve that problem, I generally glue an eyelet, nail or button to the top so I can easily identify what is inside.
Sort your things into these small organizing wonders, pop the top back on and stick a blank label around the outside. Then, label each canister to identify the contents. Finally, store these canisters in a box or basket to keep them all together.
