Have you ever made a thoughtless remark and wished you could take it back? More often than not, we all have. The worst part of it is that when we make these thoughtless remarks, we genuinely don’t mean them but they are the first thing that slips through the lips.
Take a look at the following comments; if you think you use the negative ones a lot more than the positive then it’s time you took a few moments to think before you say something to your spouse. It may take only a little bit of time, but if you practice – the positive rolls off the tongue as easily as the negative.
Negative Comments:
- What is your problem?
- What were you doing all day while you got to lay around?
- Give me a break …
- You never …
- You always …
- Since when do you …
- It’s all your fault!
- You’re just like you’re (insert name here)
- I don’t care
- I keep telling you …
- You said …
- You make me crazy
- Forget it
- You just can’t get it together
- Why should I care?
These are just some fairly common examples of negative comments and conversation pieces we use with our spouses. See a number of things that you say on there? I did. Take a few moments to take two breaths before saying one again and I bet a more positive comment will come off your tongue.
