You have most likely heard the term “chemistry” as it applies to romance and human relationships—where finding the right chemistry can be a make or break reality. But chemistry has a place in the business world too—whether you are interacting with customers, vendors, colleagues, or clients—having the right chemistry can make a big difference.
Chemistry really comes down to issues of trust and values. When you choose vendors or colleagues or even clients, you may think that you just get what you get, BUT, you can look for individuals and companies where you feel a good connection. Finding someone with whom you have a shared sense of values, work ethic, trust, etc. is really as important in a business relationship as it is in a personal relationship.
The same goes with customers and clients—while you may not have the luxury of choosing each and every customer on the basis of chemistry, making sure that you focus on some of those customers with whom you have a great connection and energizing chemistry can make your work a great deal more fulfilling and definitely more pleasant. It can also help prevent burn-out and give you a solid reason to get up and get working in the morning!
So, what do you look for in a connection with great chemistry? Someone with whom you feel rapport and feel like honest communication is taking place. You want to feel like you are being heard and understood and like you are hearing and understanding the other person. Being able trust and relate are key to a business relationship with great chemistry.
While you may not be able to ensure that every relationship that affects your home business is dripping with positive chemistry—making sure that you have some positive interactions and relationships will make doing business more of a joy.
