What Does it Really Take to Succeed in Business?

I was recently asked this question: Why do you believe some businesses succeed and others don’t?

Of course, there are many answers that come to mind.

For one thing, the person beginning the company must have the funds to stand behind the venture. This includes money for the start up (business license, equipment, software), money for advertising, money for the upkeep (as you probably won’t immediately make a million dollars upon opening your doors), money for supplies, and the list goes on and on.

You must also have the time it takes to invest in a new business venture. Expect to spend all of your waking time doing something business-related, at least in the beginning. My business is almost a year old now, and I still spend many nights working until twelve and then waking five hours later to start work again. If you are starting a company to work less, you may not get very far.

But I would say that the number one thing that I’ve found that helps make a new business succeed is the fact that someone believes so much in what he or she is doing that they find a way to make it work, no matter what.

If you have an idea and you think about it for the rest of your life but you never act upon it, that idea will never succeed.

How many times have you heard someone say, when they see a new invention or product, “I thought about doing that at one point and I never did.”

What if they had?

Not all people will be able to follow their ideas, as money and time, which I listed above as being important to success, are not always available.

But a lot of times we can work around the money issue, and we can generally give as much time as we need to give.

Really, how much sleep have you gotten since you had your first child?!

It’s amazing what we can do when we find something in which we believe and then we pour our energy into that something.

And if it doesn’t succeed? At least you will never say, ” I thought of that and never followed through.”
