Sure, growing up my brothers and I never missed an episode of “Knight Rider.” And, I confess, I did watch “Baywatch” for a couple of seasons… but what is it about David Hasselhoff that makes him so irresistible to so many? He has reached superstar status as a singer overseas, though his success in the music industry hasn’t carried over to the United States. Yet, I continue to see Hasselhoff on commercials, in magazines, in the “American Idol” audience and making the rounds on the talk show circuit. In addition, he is currently making headlines in the States as a judge on the NBC reality series “America’s Got Talent” and for his role in the Adam Sandler movie “Click.”
What is it about this guy? I have heard him sing. I have seen him act. And, I have judged his performance as a judge. I still can’t see what the fuss is all about. But, yes, there is a fuss. The 54-year-old is featured in an upcoming Newsweek magazine article. In the piece Hasselhoff tells the magazine reporter that his star is on the rise again. His new single “Jump in My Car” is headed toward the top 10 on the British charts and he is receiving positive press for his role as a judge on “America’s Got Talent,” produced by his friend Simon Cowell.
“I signed on for one season, and Simon conned me into it: ‘Here’s a lot of money,’ and it’s like “The Gong Show,”‘ Hasselhoff said. Still he says he hasn’t committed to being a judge next season.
“I’m trying to get on a sitcom or maybe even my own show, ‘Travels With the Hoff,'” he said.
But that’s not all, the actor who played lifeguard Mitch Buchannon on “Baywatch” for 11 years, is also writing his memoirs.
“It’s about growing up since I was 7 and realizing a dream,” he tells the magazine. “But when I was out trying to save the world, I forgot to save myself.”
So again I ask: What is it about this guy that makes him so popular?
