What is Love? Part 2

Yesterday we looked at the idea that love is shown practically in the day to day outworking of the marriage relationship. So, is it worth expending all that time and energy? Yes it is.

‘Love is everything it’s cracked up to be. That’s why people are so cynical about it…It really is worth fighting for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you don’t risk everything, you risk even more,’ said Erica Jong. I have to agree. Those who aren’t prepared to risk themselves and be vulnerable for love are missing out on a lot.

Real love isn’t dependant on the other person behaving in a certain way and doing certain things. Real love is unconditional.Love has no awareness of merit or demerit; it has no scale… Love loves; this is its nature,’ said Howard Thurman I found a lot of quotes about love and what it is but I have to admit I like this quote from a favorite author of mine who writes a lot about love and especially love in the marriage relationship. ‘Love is more than three words mumbled before bedtime. Love is sustained by action, a pattern of devotion in the things we do for each other every day,’Nicholas Sparks. Read ‘The Notebook’ – that’s love in action, deep long lasting love demonstrated.

No blog about love would be complete without mentioning the famous bible passage that is often read at weddings. It tells us ‘Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,’ etc. You can find it in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, 13. This is from the New American Standard version. Why not take a look at in whatever bible version you have there.

When you think about love and your spouse are you talking about the kind of love that fits these ideas of love? I hope you are. That’s the kind of love our world needs to see modeled in marriage.
