The Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree takes place once a year. For 2012, it will take place June 8, June 9, and June 10. There will also be a pre-event day happening on June 7, 2012. This is the Forty-Third annual SCGS Jamboree. Here are some things to know about this year’s Jamboree.
The first thing you should know is that you don’t have to be a member of the Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) in order to be able to be able to attend the Jamboree. You can still attend, no matter what genealogical society you happen to belong to. You can attend the Jamboree even if you don’t belong to any genealogical societies. It is not limited to members of the SCGS.
There are many benefits to being a member of the SCGS, however, so you might want to consider joining. The very first benefit that you will notice has to do with the cost of attending the Jamboree. The genealogy events, classes, and workshops that take place as the Jamboree are going to have two different prices connected to them. Some events will be free of charge for everyone who wants to attend.
Members of the SCGS will pay less to attend them than non-members will. Members also get access to the archived Jamboree Extension webinars, and remote use of Access NewspaperARCHIVE. Anyone who registers to attend the Jamboree before April 23, 2012, gets an “Early Bird Discount”. The Jamboree will be held at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel.
Next, you probably want to know at least a little bit about the Southern California Genealogical Society, or SCGS. According to their website, “The Southern California Genealogical Society exists to foster interest in family history and genealogy, preserve genealogical materials, and provide instruction in accepted and effective research techniques.”
The SCGS was first organized in 1964. It is a non-profit corporation, and enjoys tax-exempt status. Donations of cash, or library materials, or other contributions to the SCGS may qualify as charitable donations. You can become a member if you’re a Southern California resident, or if you are “sitting at a computer thousands of miles away from Burbank”, California.
The Jamboree will have speakers, exhibitors, and a writer’s conference. There will be door prizes. In upcoming blogs, I will be giving more details about things that will be happening at the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree for 2012. There will be a whole lot of interesting genealogy related things going on!
