With the high prices of food these days, it makes sense to put the effort in to get as much of your food for as little as possible. One practice that will help you to do this is foraging. Depending on the area in which you live, foraging could be a real option for you, allowing you to get some of your food for free.
Urban foraging is gathering food that grows naturally in your area. Of course, if you live in a rural or semi-rural area, you will have more options and variety than if you live in a city. Even city dwellers, can forage, though. For example, one person I know of gathers mint that grows near his apartment complex and dandelions and mushrooms from an abandoned lot.
Foraging has even been coming into its own trend, especially in California, where with a little Internet searching, you can find maps of the best foraging areas that includes neglected fruit trees.
What are some things you need to know before yo go foraging? Well, anything on public property, including fruit that is hanging over into public property is free for the taking. Mushrooms can be abundant, but certain kinds are definitely hazardous to your health. Make sure you know what you are doing before you decided to eat anything you bring home.
If you are just starting out with foraging, you may want to pick up a few books on the subject that will give you the basics. You could also consider foraging on private property, if you first get permission. Many people feel more comfortable starting out on private land.
While I have never foraged for food myself, it does seems like a great way to add some food to the diet without adding the expense. And if anyone wants to forage some black walnuts from my property, just let me know. No one in my family will touch them.
