What To Do This Weekend

What are your plans for the weekend?

Many movie fans are counting down the hours until Oscar Sunday. Will Oscar virgin Sandra Bullock win gold? Will Oscar history be made with a win by Kathryn Bigelow?

If you can’t get enough of the Academy Awards, but can’t afford a trip to Los Angeles to sit on the sidelines across from the real red carpet, then consider a trip to New York.

The Big Apple is hosting a marathon screening of New York-centric Oscar winners from “Annie Hall” to “The Godfather” through Sunday at the Walter Reade Theater. In addition, in honor of Oscar weekend, On Location tours is offering 20% off guided outings to TV and film sites, including a three-hour Classics Movie Tour on Sunday.

Finally, if you prefer not to sit alone in your sweats on your living room couch screaming at the TV during the Academy Awards broadcast, then head over to Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on Sunday night. Tickets for “Oscar Night and the City,” a fundraiser, which features cocktails, live jazz and a screening of the awards show, are still available for $150.

For those who have no interest in staying cooped up inside watching movies all weekend, you might consider a trip to Dallas.

The popular Texas city is prepping for its annual spring blossom of wildflowers. Reds, yellows, whites and blues of wildflowers are already sprouting up in record numbers, according to botanists at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at The University of Texas at Austin.

Experts say abundant rain that fell in late fall and throughout winter is the reason behind the flowers making an early appearance. Right now Indian paintbrush, Drummond phlox and Texas’ state flower: the bluebonnet can be seen dotting hillsides and local intersections throughout the state.
