What to Do With A Baby On A Wet, Cold Day

What to do

It’s definitely looking like November out there to me. Those of us who live in northern climates are descending into the depths of damp, cold winter. Here it’s more damp than cold, but it looks like night out there and it’s only quarter to two. We went out for a walk this morning, but we’re playing indoors this afternoon.

If it’s your first year with a new baby, what can you do to keep life interesting when you’re stuck indoors?

Do crafts. Yes, I know that your baby is really small. However, she’s still learning from whatever is around her. If you have a newborn, carry her while you do a craft that’s not too pokey. If you have a larger baby, give her a box of craft objects and let her explore it while you craft. Doing activities like wet felting is also an opportunity to have fun with your baby while crafting, and it’s something even tiny children can enjoy.

Clean the house. This is the time to sort through the boxes of baby photos or paint a wall. All of these can be done with a baby on your back. Just don’t get overly ambitious, or you’ll feel overwhelmed by the mess.

Dance and make music with your baby. Get a maraca or a chime or turn on the radio and dance the winter blues away.

Have a bath. Sit in the tub with your baby. If you’d like, add some nontoxic suds or play with bath crayons. Baths don’t need to be for the end of the day, especially not when the weather is cold and everyone’s up for a snuggle!

Have a fancy picnic in the living room. This is especially good for older babies. Have a selection of child-friendly foods out, and even get out a toy or two like a large ball, clear a space, and play a game.

When all else fails and you’re feeling trapped in the house, don’t despair – get out! If you find yourself getting stir crazy and it’s not dangerously cold, get outside! Visit a friend, go for a walk along city streets or in the woods, or go to a class. Maybe you’ll find some snow and get a chance to take your baby on her first ride on a sled. If you want to get out but the weather just doesn’t make you want to frolic, this is the perfect time of year to attend story time if your local library or book store offers it.

What are your plans for the dark, cold winter?
