What To Expect…. in a Movie?

If you’re reading the pregnancy blog here on Families, I’ll bet you that you’ve also read the well known book, “What To Expect When You’re Expecting.” It’s a staple on every pregnant woman’s reading list. After all, the book sums up just about every symptom and milestone of pregnancy, and it comes with its own online community. I used to keep it at my bedside during my pregnancy so I could stay up late reading about what was supposed to happen to me next. I was always surprised by how accurate the book was! It just goes to show you that even though every pregnancy is different, they are all very similar as well.

Now the book is going to be made into a movie. When I first read the news, I couldn’t figure out how a pregnancy reference book could possibly be turned into a movie, but I suppose that’s why I write blogs and not screenplays! (Or maybe this movie will bomb and my first instinct was correct.) The movie is going to be in the style of the movie “Love Actually,” and will follow multiple couples during their journey toward parenthood. I’m pretty sure that the movie is not going to be anything like a reference book, and much more like the writer’s previous works, namely “Whip It.” That’s right: the writer hired to turn the popular “pregnancy bible” into a movie is Shauna Cross.

Let’s hope the movie goes into less detail than the book. While I appreciate the information provided in “What To Expect,” I’m not sure I want to see a woman lose her mucous plug on the silver screen. Nor do I want to see a visual of morning sickness! I’ll be curious to see what exactly this movie covers when it comes out.
