Buying a baby car seat is a major decision, one that could literally save your baby’s life. With so many different sizes, styles, designs, features, colors, and shapes on the market, trying to determine the best or the “right” model can be a little challenging. Therefore, we wanted to provide you with some things to look for and consider when buying your baby’s car seat.
•Installation – Personally, I think that some baby car seats on the market today are overkill, meaning they fit the purpose but then go way beyond practicality. In this case, the installation process can be difficult and time consuming. As you shop around, consider the installation process involved for any particular model. For instance, you want something on a base and with a five-point restraint system. Other than that, things could become complicated. Now, you may not mind the effort required for a fancier car seat…or at least initially, but eventually, you will realize constant adjustments are annoying.
•Restraints – Again, there are many different restraint systems available but the five-point is by far the best. This type of harness offers one strap for each of the baby’s shoulders, one for each thigh, and then a strap that goes in between the baby’s legs. This type of restraint is adjustable, easy to use, and offers the greatest level of protection for your baby. We highly recommend that you stay away from car seats where the buckle needs to be adjusted from the back.
•Tethers – Over the years, baby car seats have gone through some serious transformations. For instance, in the fall of 2002, a new requirement went into effect by which all new safety seats and automobiles have to be LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) compatible. What this means is that the car seat installation is made directly with the car rather than using seat belts for security.
•Maintenance and Care – All babies, newborn or toddler age makes messes in the car. The best solution would be to purchase a car seat that is easy to wash but if you do not have such luxury, you can purchase a quality car seat cover to protect the car seat.
•Comfort – Obviously, you want your baby to enjoy time in the car but because smaller babies are not yet strong enough to hold the head up, they need some type of headrest or padding. In addition to making the baby’s time in the care more comfortable, this would also make the trip safer by eliminating the baby’s head from flopping side-to-side or forward.
