Whatever Do I Wear – For Women

I wrote an entry a few days ago on interview dress basics that apply to everyone. Now, I’ll take a few minutes and talk about interview attire that is specific to women.

Here are the most important things for women to remember:

Makeup – It’s okay to wear makeup and often it’s a good idea because it will brighten up your face. However, make sure that you wear neutral colors and shades. Also, avoid wearing heavy makeup.

Nails – You nails need to be neatly trimmed and look professional. If you wear polish, make sure it is in a “traditional” color like pink or red. Also, the paint needs to be fresh without chips or peeling. Finally, make sure they aren’t too long. The “talon” look isn’t the best for a job interview.

Clothing – It is important that your clothing not be provocative or suggestive. An interviewer will not take you as seriously I you are wearing a super short skirt, see-through clothing or an outfit that is too tight or revealing. Remember to choose clothes that are businesslike.

Pantyhose – I know you will hate me for this, but if you wear a skirt or a dress you must wear pantyhose. In the business world, bare legs are not considered professional. If you don’t like pantyhose, do what I do – wear slacks!

Shoes – Don’t wear towering heels or strappy shoes. Also, avoid sandals because they automatically seem causal. The best shoe for an interview is something with a moderate heel and that are closed toed/closed heeled.

These are the main basics that apply just to women. Of course, make sure you choose professional, businesslike clothing to wear. Slacks and a dressy shirt is usually appropriate as would be a skirt that is just above your knee or longer with a nice shirt. A business suit with a skirt or slacks is also always appropriate.
