What’s Going on in Your Area?

Depending on where you live, there are probably different fall festivals, harvest parties, haunted houses, and perhaps an Oktoberfest celebration or two occurring. There seems to be lots to do this time of year in many regions, perhaps with the anticipation of spending the next many months indoors due to cold weather.

Well, we do have some of this stuff out here in the sticks, but today’s big deal is the annual lawnmower races. Yep, I said lawnmower races. It’s okay to laugh; I did too when I heard about it. Some people, however, take it seriously. Some have been looking forward to this for a good while now. It’s been all the talk at my kids’ schools, and there are apparently some pretty fierce competitors.

Leave it to a Yankee like me to not even be aware of an annual event like this. Apparently, this is how they kick off spirit week (next week) just before homecoming. I shouldn’t say this, and I hope nobody from here reads it, but I guess I’d get a little more excited if we had a better football team. If my cheerleader daughter sees this, I’m in trouble.

Oh, speaking of my daughter, I forgot to mention the other annual event that kicks off homecoming, Powder Puff Football. Do they do this in your area? Would you let your daughter play football? I wouldn’t let mine play against boys, but since Powder Puff is two hand touch, I compromised. If she’ll quit asking to join the boys’ team, I’ll deal with the Powder Puff thing. From cheerleader to fullback. At least she’s well rounded.

I understand her love of football, because I love it too. I’d just prefer that she watch or cheer rather than play. I took her to Powder Puff practice today, and that’s how I found out about the lawnmower races.

My other daughter is happy being a Homecoming Maiden and shopping for a new dress.

So, what’s going on by you? Any interesting events in your area?
