The human body is a very interesting thing, as are the genes within it. Some of our physical traits are uniquely our own, and others we have inherited from our parents or other ancestors. It can be confusing to know which things are commonly inherited and which are not.
For example, the shape of your hairline is determined by genetics. Some of us have a hairline that goes straight across our forehead, while others have what is called a widow’s peak hairline. The Widow’s peak hairline comes to a point in the center of the forehead. I just looked at my own hairline and it is straight. I also just looked over at my younger son’s hair, and he has a widow’s peak. I am pretty sure that my older son has one too, but he’s in bed so I am not going to check on that.
Another inherited trait is whether or not the bottom of your earlobes attach to the side of your head. That’s something that many people don’t notice or think about. Did you know that the ability to roll your tongue is not related to talent? It’s an inherited trait too, just like those adorable dimples. A chin cleft (like a dimple in the chin) is also something that is inherited. One of my sons has it, and it looks so cute on his chubby little baby face.
There are also inherited traits that are related to things that we can not see when we look at people. Allergies are an example of an inherited trait that you would not see in a family photo. The same goes for colorblindness.
There are many traits that we can inherit from our ancestors. Do you know who in your family shares the physical traits that you have.
