There are countless articles out there giving excellent reasoning to abstain from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series of books. There are also sites that praise these books for their captivation and appeal to young readers.
I’ve had some Christians state that I overreact regarding the dangers of Harry Potter. I have good reason to feel the way I do. It should be noted that I have not read any of the books from cover to cover myself. What I’ve read of excerpts, the backs of the books and reviews from both sides of the Harry Potter debate that have brought me to the belief I now have of the books.
In my opinion, the occultist practices in the books alone should be reason enough for a Christian to avoid this series. To subject children to things of a dark nature—even in the name of good is scary to me. It is subjecting young minds to the lie that sorcery can be good, which is exactly what Satan would have for parents and children to believe. Remember, even Satan comes as an angel of light. So, if it’s make-believe, then what’s the harm? Well, the harm is, we are told to be innocent concerning evil and just because the book is said to be fictional, does not justify the fact that there is an introduction or at least an imbedded curiosity to a realm of witchcraft which the Bible clearly speaks against.
We should not be associating ourselves with the conjuring up of spells, practicing witchcraft or sorcery (Deuteronomy 18:9-13). Please read my blog on The Occult and Christians for more scripture and why we as believers shouldn’t be subjecting ourselves to such abominations.
I understand there are believers out there who really have never thought about the spiritual ramifications on children reading such books—or even on themselves. Many of you may have these books in your home right now. I just ask you to pray and let the Lord speak to you about where to go from here. Take a look at the books yourselves and decide, based on what the word of God says, in which direction you’ll go.
