Pet Horoscopes: What’s Your Pet’s Sign?

I find astrology really interesting. I know some people would argue it’s evil because it goes against the teachings of their religions.

I have no idea whether it’s bad or not. I just know astrology predates many of those religions and that even presidents as recent as Ronald Reagan have consulted astrologers to guide them in their daily affairs. I also don’t know if there really is something to the way the stars and planets are lined up that affect us, but I have noticed a couple of things.

One, when it’s a full moon people do tend to act differently. A little more aggressive and unpredictable. Second, snafus, hiccups, breakdowns and setbacks in general do reign supreme during periods of Mercury Retrograde. (And for those of you who know what I’m talking about, the first one for 2008 is coming on January 28 and will last until February 19.)

Also, there do tend to be some traits people of the same signs share in common. For instance, both Wayne and I are Virgos. While we don’t manifest all the same tendencies, we definitely exhibit the big ones: we can be over-critical and worry way more than necessary, but we’re also pretty modest and among the most dependable people you’ll ever meet.

But what about pets? Can the stars clue us in to why they behave in the ways they do too? Perhaps…

Among my favorites for a general overview of pet Zodiac signs is Astrology Weekly. Their list is more specific to certain types of behaviors and traits.

For instance, a Gemini pet “talks a lot…barks, meows, chirps, sings, cackles, grunts, etc.” Capricorn pets are classified as “miserly and possessive with personal belongings and food.”

But another outstanding pet horoscope site is Petroscopes. They not only explain pet behavior based on what Zodiac sign the pet’s born under, but they also give weekly and yearly forecasts.

I don’t know the exact birth months of any of my pets since they all came to me as strays. I can guesstimate that Murphy could have been a March or April baby. We adopted him in September and believe he was either five or six months old at the time. (But he could have been slightly older or younger. We just have no way of knowing for sure.)

Tabby, too, was maybe about five months old when I first found her. Give or take a month or two.

And who knows about crotchety old Mr. Meow. His birth month is as much a mystery as his age.

However, if I had to venture guesses based on sign descriptions, I’d say Murphy’s either a Pisces or Taurus, Tabby’s a Leo or Cancer, and Mr. Meow has characteristics that fit Sagittarius, Gemini, or Cancer. (Especially Cancer, he loves water –drinking it, playing in it, being around it. That’s why I got him a fountain type drinking bowl. He plays in it to his heart’s content!)
