Have you ever considered that your blood type could affect how your digest food? I know I certainly had not given that any thought. However, a good friend of mine said she learned of a diet that claimed your diet is determined by your blood type. Maybe some of you have heard of this diet already; the Blood Type Diet.
Normally, I dismiss talk about diets. We all have heard that diets don’t work. I believe that a diet only works as long as the novelty still presents itself to the dieter. Once the novelty wears off or the dieter gets bored, then old food habits surface and dieting becomes a thing of the past. Lifestyle changes are the only long term and effective method for weight loss and control.
At any rate, I did not dismiss the blood type diet for two reasons; 1) my friend said that a doctor suggested the diet and 2) when I read what I should eat it made sense as it also did for my friend. The blood type diet does not focus on what you cannot eat but what you should be eating. Many of the food listed for my type were foods that caused me problems if I ate them. The same was true for my friend. So is that proof enough?
The brain child behind the blood type diet is Dr. Peter D’Adamo. You can read this theory on how blood type affects your health and weight with respect to food choice in his book, Eat Right 4 Your Type. However, if you search the internet you can get a fairly clear idea of this diet by a simple search. It is important to note that his evidence is not based in or supported by scientific evidence. It is also important to note that many have criticized this diet based on lack of research, blood type evolution issues and lack of clinical trials.
The lack of evidence alone does not prove a theory invalid but simply means more research should be conducted to draw proper conclusions. The diet is not harmful or extreme for most blood types. My blood type is A and it basically says I should be a vegetarian. That is as extreme as it gets and believe me that is fairly extreme for someone who never considered the option before. I have long considered a vegetarian lifestyle for many health reasons. My advice would be to read up on the diet and see where you fall. If it makes sense to you that meat or dairy should be cut out of your diet due to issues you currently experience then cut out those foods. Just remember that there is no scientific basis for this diet so there is no need to suddenly say, “I can’t eat tomatoes” simply because a man on the internet told you not to.
