When Do You Buy A New Computer?

With the release of Windows Vista a lot of people are faced with the problem of whether to upgrade their existing computer to support the OS, stick with their old copy of Windows, or simply purchase a new computer.

That got me to thinking…How often do you purchase a new computer?

I purchased a G4 PowerMac early in 2001. I used that computer exclusively until December of last year when I purchased a MacBook Pro laptop. I absolutely love my laptop, it was one of those purchases I contemplated for years before actually making however.

For me I think I’m working on an every 6 year average per computer right now. Part of the reason I waited for 6 years however was monetary. If I could have afforded a MacBook the day they were released I would have probably bought one. That probably wouldn’t have been the only computer I purchased. Truth be told my G4 still works fine today. If I didn’t “want” a new computer there really would have been no reason to purchase one. With all the writing I’ve been doing however I really wanted the ability to take my computer with me on the go rather than be tied down to my home office. My computer was also incredibly expensive when I bought it. If it hadn’t lasted 6 years I would have been at least a little irritated.

How often do you buy a new computer? I imagine I am in the minority with my 6 year average. Is a new computer an every year purchase? An every other year purchase? Do you plan on buying a new computer every so often, or do you just buy a new computer when your old one breaks or needs a massive upgrade to do what you need it to do?
