When Foster Families Adopt

There are many advantages for everyone concerned when a foster family makes the decision to adopt a child that has been in their care. It is a win – win situation for everyone involved.

The foster family is well suited to provide a permanent home for the child. They already have an awareness of the child’s background before he came to live with them. They also know the bad habits that the child has. If the child has to go to a new home, then all parties will probably have a difficult time for a while.

Several of our Gotcha Days were very difficult. Because we had no real information regarding what to expect, we were reacting to behaviors and creating more stress for everyone. The family that already has the child in their home can quickly recognize and react to correct undesirable conduct.

The foster family will also have less anxiety regarding the child’s birth parents as they will have already encountered them. They will already know what to expect from them. Our first few meetings with our birth mother were very difficult.

There are also several important advantages for the child when he is not relocated to another home. He will be very conscious of his environment in the home where he is living. When Matthew Walter came to our house for the first time, he spent at least an hour walking around looking at everything.

Even a very young baby will notice a change of surroundings. They will perceive a change in recognizable sights, noises, odors, and contacts.

By staying with his foster parents, the child will already be familiar with the household. He will also be accustomed to the home and its various rooms, including his own room. He will also not have to be the new kid at yet another school.

There is also some worth to the birth parents as they will know the people that the child will be living with. This will help decrease their anxiety about an already difficult situation.

There is an increasing trend for potential adoptive parents to first foster a child before considering adoption. When the process works, it is good for everyone.
