We are in the middle of the first hot and sticky bits of summer. The window air conditioners got in the windows just in time, and the thought of turning on the oven banishes any thoughts of cool comfort that we might have left. You just have to figure out other ways to cook.
The Grill
This is the typical summer cooking appliance. You can get wonderful flavor on a grill all the while keeping the heat out of your home. Plus, using a grill can be a lot of fun and earn you bragging rights.
What can you typically put on a grill? Pretty much anything that can be baked or roasted. You just need the right tools, from grilling baskets for delicate vegetables and fruits to special pots for boiling and slow cooking.
The Crockpot
Speaking of slow cooking, there is really nothing easier in the summer (or anytime) than the crockpot. You can make everything from oatmeal to stew. Pick up a few good crockpot cookbooks and get started. The crockpot does contribute heat to the house, but only a very small amount compared to an oven. Since slow cookers are portable, you can also plug one outside or on a covered porch. Just keep it out of direct sunlight and take it in once the cooking is done.
The Solar Oven
You can buy or make a solar oven which relies on the heat of the sun to cook your meal. It is placed outside, in the sun. Not only will you keep the heat out of the house, but you’ll also save money in energy costs, since you won’t have to use either gas or electricity to cook.
The Stovetop
Adapt some of your favorite recipes to the stove top instead of the oven if you can. You’ll generate less heat than you would by baking or roasting, although you will still add some heat and even humidity to your home.
