When Kids Go Missing

This week I had a scare that many families always worry about and hopefully never have to go through, but let me give you a little background information first. My children, (I have two in school) both go to school on a military base and for many of us that means a little bit more security. I mean we choose between public school and base schools for many reasons but the number one is knowing our children are safe.

My daughter goes to a school that is normally great, I really do like her school but there are some issues just like any other school. I learned a new one this week, but first I wanted to talk about some of the good things. Number one is the different types of classes they teach here. There are the regular grades and the multi-grades, these multi grades are like kindergarten and first grade together in one class. This way if a child is still slightly behind they can still go to first and use the kindergarten class when needed. My daughter wasn’t she was a bit ahead and the school realized this with a few students and placed them in advanced classes. I’ve got to say this is a definite thumbs up, my daughter comes home twice a week after having her special science class telling me about the new experiments she did.

Another thing is they are trying to reach out to the children, by giving them other classes they may and may not get in a public school. I grew up in military schools (until high school) so honestly I don’t know how they really are. But they are starting base schools off by teaching Spanish from kindergarten up, and by 5th grade the children are then introduced to Chinese. They also have music, choir, computer, p.e., art, and many other subjects that I’m sure I’m missing.

Anyways, it was raining out and I thought I’d show up five minutes before they were released from school so my little girl didn’t have to wait outside in the rain. Guess what? When I got there children were already loading into vehicles, I looked everywhere for my daughter’s class but they weren’t in sight. A teacher told me that they released 15 minutes early and she was probably already at the designated spot. However, she wasn’t, I found her teacher a few minutes later and we frantically searched for her. At first I was calm but as the minutes ticked on I couldn’t help but wonder if she got in someone’s car even after we’ve talked about this, walked home or who knows what. Finally after a search, my son’s school was released and he was on his way towards her school when I noticed someone beside him. Yep, it was her, she was so proud that she walked herself to his school all by herself, needless to say she did get a little chewing out and we did talk a long time about leaving the designated area. The school also heard about not contacting family when they release early, especially when parents try picking up their missing children. UGH!! Keep in mind, even the best schools can have their flaws.
