When Opposites Attract…

I know that you have heard it. It has been said for years. Opposites attract. While perhaps it is true that opposites do attract, the real question is can they live together happily as a married couple?

While the differences may have intrigued and attracted the two of you in the beginning, after some time the attraction typically lessens.

While it may seem like your spouse is truly from another planet, maybe he or she is simply just from the other end of the personality spectrum.

The major problem with personality differences is that as humans we all have an area of blindness. In this area we are not able to see the logic in approaches and thoughts that are different from our own.

Just because you and your mate suddenly realize that the two of you have completely different outlooks and worldly views on problem solving does not mean that you must immediately file under irreconcilable differences. The two of you can learn to live with and in fact even be happy with the ideas of the other.

If you think about it hard enough you probably can admit that the things that are completely driving you crazy about your spouse now were the little things that motivated you and were attractive to you while you were dating.

When you were dating you were more open to new and different ideas. His or her quirks were exciting and drove you to venture outside of your personal comfort zone. However, now that you are having to function not as individuals but as one, the differences are more of a burden than an adventure.

In the next few articles I will take a look at how mates with different personalities can make their differences work to their benefit.
