When death is knocking at your door, and you’re forced to review your life, what will you consider your single most important success?
I know that I will be able to embrace dying much more, provided my daughter has grown up to be a loving, caring, selfless individual.
Society is quick to point its collective finger at parents whose children turn into murderers, rapists and thieves, and in some cases, lack of parental supervision is to blame for children who grow up to be criminals.
But what about all the kids, who from a very young age, show signs of being mature beyond their years? Kids like Darryl Currie.
The 16-year-old St. Louis boy is the product of a broken home. Darryl’s single mother, Fareda Lytle, conceived him when she was a teen. Due to personal problems, Lytle was forced to live in a local women’s shelter until she gave birth to Darryl.
The boy had a rough start in life and his story could have easily winded up on the 6 p.m. news to illustrate how underprivileged, teenage moms often produce hardened criminals. However, Darryl’s story is making headlines for the opposite reason.
The teen is attracting national media attention for what he isn’t doing. Darryl is not spending his free time robbing local liquor stores; he’s not in jail for selling drugs; and he is not the target of an enraged father whose underage daughter he just impregnated.
Rather, the high school student is making headlines for his ability to knit. As in knit-one-purl-one…
The fact that Darryl is a self-taught teen knitter is impressive enough, but it’s what he is doing with his skills, that’s making waves.
Instead of knitting wool hoodies for his pals or selling knitted cellphone covers on the streets of St. Louis, Darryl makes beautiful handmade blankets for children living at a local shelter.
While the teen has been contributing his talents to Our Ladies Inn shelter for a while now, it wasn’t until recently that he discovered that the facility is the same one his mother stayed at while she was pregnant with him.
The news even shocked Darryl’s mom, who says she couldn’t be prouder of her son.
Lytle obviously did something right to turn an unwanted pregnancy into a success story like this.
Success!
