When the pressure is on, the tension in a marriage can really mount. While it isn’t the most pleasant feeling, sometimes you just have to go with it. You have to allow for those ugly moments and know that you will make it through.
That is exactly where my marriage has been at for over a week now. We have been experiencing a lot of uncertainty about when our 18-year-old son is leaving for basic training. We are told one thing one day and something else another day.
It is frustrating because we are trying to emotionally prepare ourselves for his leave date, but we can’t. It seems no one really knows when he is going to leave.
That in itself is hard enough to deal with but now we are throwing together a last minute graduation/farewell party in case he does leave next week. His party was originally scheduled for the middle of July.
But with so many uncertainties concerning him possibly leaving next week and even if he doesn’t, the realization that he could leave with just a day’s notice…we have no choice but to throw this party together.
So its last minute inviting, purchasing items, and figuring out how we are going to have it ready on Sunday when we have a graduation party to attend Friday night and we are out of town all day Saturday.
Needless to say, the pressure has been strong and it has caused quite a few ugly moments. But what’s strange is that we seem to be giving each other a pass without having to say it. It’s like we just know that it is what it is and we have to be able to accept it.
It’s probably not a popular concept, to allow the tense moments to have their way. But when life brings it on, there really isn’t any other choice.
I know in the end we will be okay. Heck, we will probably be a lot stronger for it.
