When You Don’t Feel Like Working

Do you ever have one of those days where you just don’t feel like working? When you work outside of the home you can quickly pass over that feeling. You really don’t have a choice. But when you do work inside the home, it can be a little more challenging.

Really, any occasion is a good occasion to not work. There are days when the sun is shining and the temperature is just perfect. I would much rather be sitting out on my deck reading a good book. There are days when it is cold and rainy. I would much rather still be in my pajamas watching a good movie. The point is there is always a reason to not want to work.

I love my work. I mean, I really do. I am doing my dream job and so I really can’t complain. Yet that pull to do other things, to not work is sometimes very strong. I have too many distractions that are at close range. It would be easy to close the laptop and flip on the television. It would be easy to put aside my to-do-list and crawl back into bed.

But I plug on. I have to really discipline myself and sometimes that is much tougher than other days. The reason I don’t give in to that feeling is because I know that if I do it one day, the next day the pull will be even stronger. Besides, I really don’t want to fall behind schedule. I arrange my work so that I get the weekends off. I don’t want to spend my weekend doing catch-up work.

When you don’t feel like working but you know it needs to be done, try to refocus your thoughts. Put them back on your work. If you really do feel a five minute break would do you some good, spend those five minutes doing something that won’t drag you in. If you know that five minutes of television will likely result in more, then opt for maybe listening to five minutes of music. Or do some exercises for five minutes.

What do you do when you don’t feel like working?
