When Your Refrigerator Has Become a Science Project

I don’t know if you can relate but the one area of my kitchen that is always sorely in need of cleaning is the refrigerator. I always tell myself that I am going to do a thorough cleaning out each week, which would make staying on top of it easier.

Yet one week turns into two, turns into three and by the end of the month it is as if I have a science project going.

I will never forget the one time I cleaned out my refrigerator and discovered I had eight, yes; count them, eight tubs of sour cream. They had been pushed to the back of the fridge.

So what do you do when your refrigerator has become nothing more than a science project? Well you put on your gloves and you get to work.

You start by completely emptying out the fridge, which means immediately tossing those things you no longer want, have grown fuzz or whose expiration date has long passed.

Then it’s time to dismantle the shelves and any part of your fridge that will come out. That makes cleaning the easiest.

The product I have found that works best, which also works on a number of other things in the home is the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. But if your refrigerator is really bad, you may need something more powerful such as a mildew remover spray…gosh, I hope your fridge isn’t that bad.

One of the cool things about dismantling your refrigerator is that you can usually reassemble the shelving. This is your chance to make things within the fridge more organized and put in a way that makes sense.

Then you can begin to put back everything that is still edible. Now really, this goes without saying, but if you don’t want your refrigerator cleaning to be nothing more than a science project then you really do need to schedule it in as a weekly chore. This will make the upkeep so much easier.
