It seems like no matter where I set up my computer, it winds up being the wrong place. While in college, I used to always have my computer by my bedside. It was great for writing papers, and for reading the instant messages sent in the middle of the night. When I graduated I kept the habit for a few years, and then eventually moved my computer into a room dedicated as a home office, in an attempt to keep myself off the internet and focus on my home more.
What has occurred is that my home office, rather than my living room, has become my refuge. I tend to spend MUCH more time in there than I would if my computer wasn’t there. I walk in as soon as I come home from being out to check my email, and then again after dinner, before I go to bed, whenever I get bored. My life to some extent is focused around that room. Where my computer is, I’m not far behind. When I was in college, that one room was the only room that was mine, so it made sense, now I almost feel like I should be out interacting in the world rather than sitting in front of a computer screen.
Wireless internet is making it easier and easier to take your computer with you where ever you go. You can have your computer with you at the coffee shop, the bar, or even while you’re having dinner. With the ability to surf the web, and use your computer, literally everywhere, where do you draw the line. Is it ok to take your computer with you to the coffee shop? What about out to dinner with your family, when you have work to do? Where do you use your computer?
