Where is your security?

When things go wrong in your life, where do you turn? To a friend, husband, wife, parent? Or do you turn to some activity to try and help you forget for a while what is happening?

Many women have experienced the fear of finding a lump in their breast. I’ve known it myself. It my case it was a cyst and easily dealt with. For others the prognosis is not so good. Breast cancer – even the words can strike fear into a woman’s heart.

Yesterday a dear friend and I went along to ‘Wade in the Water’ a function being held at 3pm simultaneously all over Australia to raise money for breast cancer. The film told the story of one woman diagnosed with breast cancer and how singing in a gospel choir helped her though it. Then two local women who had themselves been diagnosed with breast cancer, told of their experiences with the disease.

In though times, the Christian has something that the non Christian does not. They have Jesus to help them through the hard times. They have His Word to strengthen and encourage them and give them a lift when they need it. They can know His peace because He will not leave them alone.

Statistics show that people with faith have a better chance of recovery. Why should we doubt it when we have the Power of the Universe on our side? Does that always mean the person will be healed? No it does not. The choice is God’s.

Last week our church lost a faithful believer to cancer. God chose not to heal her. Why? Only God knows. I hadn’t met the woman, as she went to a different service in another church in our parish. But I’d heard about her, her great example of faith and witness to the power of God in her life.

For whatever reason God didn’t heal her, but He gave her the strength to go through that experience. Who knows how many lives she touched and influenced by her life and faithfulness to God in her suffering? In the end, God took her victorious to be with Him.

I often wonder how non Christians manage when tough times come. From my own experience I know in the tough times of my life, it has been that relationship with Jesus and a dependence on Him and His Word that has pulled me through.

If you don’t currently know that security and peace in your life will you reach out to Him now? If you do know Him, will you take a moment to pray for those you personally know who are going through tough times and do not know the Lord? Maybe ring them or drop them a line to let them know you are thinking of them and praying for them. It might be exactly what they need to hear at this time.
