In three days the United States will honor Martin Luther King Jr. on what would have been the civil rights leader’s 79th birthday. Festivities marking the occasion are planned throughout the country with larger celebrations taking place at major civil rights landmarks.
Organizers of this weekend’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations expect an attendance boost because of the presidential primaries and the way his legacy has played a role in the campaign. In addition, this year marks the 40th anniversary of King’s death.
“Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not a Day Off,” is this year’s theme for various Martin Luther King Jr. Day events from prayer breakfasts to seminars and marches across the country.
Among the observances open to the public are:
Atlanta–Ebenezer Baptist Church is hosting its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day service and for the first time the event will be simulcast on a JumboTron screen at the MLK National Historic Site Rose Garden.
Memphis–In downtown Memphis, the National Civil Rights Museum will offer discounted admission and musical performances throughout the weekend. Also, the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies will stage a symposium before their specially scheduled afternoon game at the FedEx Forum.
Birmingham, Alabama—-This weekend the Civil Rights Institute is offering free admission and an art exhibit called “Civil Rights: 50 Year Reflection.”
OTHER VACATION OPTIONS
If you love riding horses and you love travel, then you should seriously consider signing up for an equestrian vacation.
Right now Cross Country International is offering vacation packages for horse lovers with various riding experiences from relaxed trail rides to intensive rides — including cross-country training, dressage and “hunt seat”-style rides. You can also choose English or Western saddle, and should expect to spend from one to more than three hours a day on horseback, depending on the package you choose.
The riding packages are being offered in various locations around Europe, Central and South America and the United States. A range of accommodations is also offered, from bed-and-breakfasts to castles, farms and four-star hotels. On some trips, accommodations change nightly as you tour the region.
Also, rates vary depending on the locale. For example, a seven-day inn-to-inn riding trip in Provence runs about $2,300 per person, double occupancy, including all meals, rides on five days, six nights of lodging, transfers from airports and train stations, and guides. Airfare is not included.
