Where to Spend World Ocean Day

Can you really think of a better place to spend World Ocean Day than in one of the most incredibly beautiful places on earth, which just happens to be set smack in the middle of the Pacific Ocean?

I’m talking about Hawaii and if I hadn’t used up my vacation time to travel there a couple of months ago I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to head back on June 8th.

On World Ocean Day the Maui Ocean Center will pay tribute to our watery resources with fun-filled activities for the entire family. The center is hosting an OceanFest from June 6-13, which will feature ocean art displays, live entertainment, hula performances, cooking demonstrations and booths run by various environmental organizations, including the Pacific Whale Foundation, Hawaii Wildlife Fund, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Maui Invasive Species Committee.

According to Maui Ocean Center managers, the festival is designed to provide guests with the opportunity to learn about the ocean and its amazing inhabitants, and to discover ways they can help protect it for future generations.

If you can’t make it to Maui on June 8th you can visit the 300 other aquariums, zoos, museums, universities, schools and businesses around the globe that will be sponsoring special events in conjunction with World Ocean Day.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with World Ocean Day, the observance was first launched in 1992 at the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to encourage people to be conscientious caretakers of our oceans. Founders also wanted to set aside a day to call attention to the harmful effects of global warming, pollution, overfishing and carbon dioxide emissions.

Scientists who study the world’s water supply say most people don’t realize how much our population depends on our oceans. Think about it; oceans are responsible for generating most of the oxygen we breathe, along with regulating our climate, and providing us with food and ingredients for medicines.

So where are you planning to spend World Ocean Day?
