Where Would I Be without My Notepad and Datebook?

We single parents do fuss a bit over our time management! Even though I do try to keep my life as simple as possible and I do advocate for trying to let things go and NOT get too wrapped up with checklists and deadlines, I have to admit that I would be lost without my datebook and my notepads and lists…

As I write this morning, I have my datebook lying open by the phone, a manila folder in front of my with the notes for a proposal project I need to finish, and a little yellow pad to my right where I have scribbled a few items I need to pick up at the store this afternoon, as well as a brief menu for tonight’s supper. On the other side of my desk is a notebook where I keep story, blog and article ideas—I take that with me everywhere since I never know when inspiration will strike. It is certainly all not very glamorous, but like most single parents I cannot afford a personal secretary so this is the system that works.

I used to be able to remember quite a bit in my head. If I give myself enough time, I can still usually extract something if I forgot to write it down, but writing things down immediately is what keeps this single parent’s life from ending up in complete chaos. I don’t really have organized checklists and regimented schedules—but I do keep the notepads handy and put things into my datebook as soon as possible. My kids have even learned that if it doesn’t get into my calendar—it is NOT happening as far as mom knows.

I wish I didn’t have to multi-task on such a level, but it really is the reality of the “job” of single parenting. Doing one thing at a time (and without writing it down) just is not an option!
