Yesterday my husband and I took a day off work, and thinking about the house situation, and took ourselves out to the Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo. What a wonderful day we had, enjoying the infinite variety and creativity of our great God.
I was reminded of a book I’m currently reading for review and the words of Kate the narrator of Hello God by Moya Simons ‘Wow, God you have a great imagination.’ This was exactly what I thought as I looked the majesty of the African Lion. It wasn’t hard to see why C.S. Lewis chose a Lion for the figure of Aslan in the Narnia Chronicles. The African Lion is so regal.
We marveled at the sleek beauty of the Tiger with its striking colors. We enjoyed the playfulness of the Wombat who initiated a game with us and the brash showing off by the baby Siamang as he demonstrated his skills of swinging upside down from a rope, holding on by one hand and tumbling around on the ground. We saw the strength of the Elephants as they effortlessly lifted logs with their trunks and the gentleness of the Giraffes as they curled their long tongues around carrots held by the littlest children. A particular favorite of ours was the Meerkats. We have some great photos of one Meerkat keeping watch, like a lookout, while the others went about their business.
Enjoying the wonders of God’s creation, reminded me of years ago when our daughter was being taught evolution at school. The teacher insisted that the whole world was created, not by God, by a big bang – an accident. Our young daughter who had been taught creation stories at home and in Sunday school turned around quick as a blink and said, ‘But who do you think created the accident? Only God could do that.’ Her sure response that left the teacher flustered and stuttering for words.
I have to say the more I see of God’s creation, its infinite variety and complexity, the more I have come to the conclusion it takes a bigger stretch of credibility to believe these things happened by accident and evolution than it does to believe in a marvelous Creator who created this world and all in it for our pleasure and benefit. Take a look at Genesis 1 and John 1:3
