When a new baby arrives, it is interesting to see what different family members say about the ways in which the baby seems to resemble others in the family. This weekend, my boys and I spent some time with my in – laws. Blake is now six months old, and his personality is blossoming. Dylan will be three in November, and his personality is very much evident as well.
Over the course of the weekend, my mother – in – law was able to make some observations about the boys. She noticed that Blake has a widow’s peak hairline, like my husband. She also noticed that Blake’s personality, combined with his roly poly appearance, reminds her so much of my husband when he was a baby. She used to call him “Jolly Ollie”, because he was a chubby, smiley baby who was rather mellow for someone so small. Blake seems to have the “Jolly Ollie” demeanor going for him too, right down to the sparkle in his eyes. My mother – in – law also noticed that Dylan is very expressive and intense, like my husband’s brother.
My father – in – law also made some observations that were interesting. For example, Dylan’s build is slender and somewhat muscular with light hair and skin. Apparently, my husband’s older brother looked like that when he was a little boy. According to my father – in – law, Blake appears to bear a resemblance to what my husband looked like as a baby, with slightly darker hair and skin and a chubbier build.
I wonder if as time goes on; either of the boys will exhibit any physical or personality traits that resemble me. It may be that the traits of their father and uncle are more readily observable because they are little boys. My dad has noticed that Dylan has an insatiable curiosity, just like I did. He says that I used to ask “Why” just as much as he does.
