Who Does the Dishes?

I was talking to someone the other day who said that in his household, his wife did all of the cooking, while he did all of the dishes. This was because his wife enjoyed cooking and he did not, so doing the dishes was a small price to pay for eating well.

We tried this in our household, but I have to confess that it doesn’t always work. I usually do the cooking, and my husband does some of the dishes sometimes. He also does some of the cooking sometimes, too, as long as it is something pretty easy, such as grilled cheese, a frozen prepared meal (put it in the oven or the wok when you get home) etc.

Of course, it might be interesting to know that my husband used to work in a restaurant. In contrast, during that same period of time, I was preparing cereal or frozen meals for myself at home.

Once we got married and had a child, we decided I would stay home, and that is when my cooking and dishes began. It is more practical that way. Since I work from home, I can usually fit kitchen duty in some how. Since I have kids at home, we generate dishes all day long, and it is easier to do them as they come up than to let them turn into Mount Wash Me.

The other reason for my doing the dishes is that I have a lower dirty dish tolerance than he does. I can go into a fit when I wake up in the morning and see a sink full of dishes, while my husband might barely give them a glance. I think the dirty dishes could actually get up and do the Paso Doble before he would even notice that something needed to be done.

But I know I am being a bit unfair. I usually excuse myself right after dinner to get freelance work done, and I’ll find that the dishwasher has been loaded in my absence.

Who does the dishes at your house?
