Who Invented The Burger? The Debate Rages On

You may have heard the popular statement, “American as apple pie,” but I think the statement would be just as popular, “American as a burger.” Americans have long enjoyed burgers. With bun, without the bun, with cheese, without cheese, with or without mayo, mustard, pickles, lettuce, tomato, and just about anything else you can think of. There are burgers for spicy-food lovers. There are burgers for barbecue lovers. There are even burgers for pineapple lovers. Regardless of what type of burger you like, chances are someone in your state makes it.

So who invented the first burger in the United States? For this question, there is apparently no definitive answer. There is, however, a debate that has been raging for decades.

Connecticut lays claim to the first hamburger, and they’ve apparently got a document in the Library of Congress to prove it. They say the first burger was prepared there in 1900 when a man came into a New Haven restaurant called Louis’ Lunch and asked to be served something he could eat on the run.

But Texas isn’t buying it. They claim that Fletcher Davis in Athens, Texas served the first hamburger in the late 1800’s. It was served from a luncheonette, according to state representative Betty Brown.

Even Wisconsin is getting in on the debate, claiming to have served the first burger in 1895 in the town of Seymour. According to those making the claim, a man named “Hamburger” Charlie Nagreen invented the first burger for sale.

Whoever invented the hamburger (the debate will likely rage on indefinitely), folks in this country are certainly glad they did.

Anyway you like it; burgers are a part of American culture and here to stay.
